Thomas is one month!
Time sure has flown this month. We’ve been so busy since he was born! First, we spent a week driving to and from the NICU. Once he was home, we had paperwork to do (thanks, Army!) and places to be, and I had healing to do. Before we knew it, Brandon was back at work and I was fending for myself with two kids. It was rough. (I kid, I kid, it’s actually been a breeze!)
July has been good to us. Thomas has been good to us. He has fit into our family like he was always there. Brandon loves having his little boy. Penny loves having a little brother. I love having a little baby again.
As much as I love the toddler and preschool age, and I do, I forgot that I do like having a baby around. They’re cute. Their cries are more tolerable. Diapers aren’t as stinky, yet. They don’t move. That in itself is so nice. Because when they start moving, it’s all over! 😉
So how’s Thomas doing this past month?
STATS: Thomas started out at 8lbs 10oz, and I last measured him at nearly 11 pounds. He’s a big boy. I hear it all the time too! No clue how long he is, but he’s grown, because his carseat straps need to be adjusted soon, and clothes are a bit tighter. Speaking of clothes, he barely wore newborn outfits, though I squeezed him in a few at the beginning of the month. He went straight to 0-3, and just yesterday sported a 3 month size. Yikes. He wears cloth diapers part-time, since we only have 16 that fit him at the moment, and he wears disposables the rest of the time. He still wears a size 1, but he will be moving to a size 2 real soon. This boy has big feet, big biceps, and broad shoulders. He’s his daddy’s son. Oh, his hair is a darker blond, and his eyes are a dark brown. I don’t expect either of those to change! He’s been battling baby acne for the past couple weeks. I’m hoping it’ll go away soon!
EAT: He nurses really well! He’s actually very efficient and doesn’t take long to get out what he wants. He does have a choking problem, so there’s a lot of pauses to burp him, and he spits up. Yuck. It doesn’t seem to bother him, except the gas bubbles, so we keep on nursing as we do. He coos and sighs while he nurses, like it’s the best thing in the world, and I love it. He will also scream his head off if you don’t feed him immediately when he wants it! He nurses every few hours and typically only on one side.
PLAY: Not much here, yet. When he’s awake, he likes lying on our chests and looking around. He loves bright lights and when I sing the Star Spangled Banner. He doesn’t fuss at tummy time, complete opposite of Penny. He also loves being worn in whatever carrier I use (I prefer the ring sling at the moment), also completely different from Penny. He is a mover, though, and I expect him to be rolling and crawling early. If he’s on his belly, he can nearly push himself over onto his back, and he can wiggle himself around in a circle. Way different than Penny, who was a bit lazy at this age 😉
SLEEP: Like I tell everyone – he sleeps like a newborn. What’s different, though if he doesn’t require me to rock him for 45 minutes after I nurse him at night. On the good nights, he wakes up two or three times, nurses, falls asleep on my chest, and then goes back to bed. He likes to have a pacifier, so I make sure to have one around to stick in his mouth if he fusses. We discovered he likes to sleep on his belly, so that’s how we’ve been putting him to bed. He hasn’t ever really liked being swaddled. He wakes up early (like everyone in this house…) and stays up for a couple hours, almost, before taking a long morning nap. Then he’s up for a bit, and then back down for another nap, then up for a bit around dinner, and then down again! We’re constantly on the go, though, so he takes naps in the car or on me. I don’t think he likes that as much.
NEW: Everything is new this month! The wiggles, the sounds, the smiles. We’ve caught him smiling a few times, but he’s normally a serious guy. Like his dad. Speaking of, he looks exactly like Brandon. If I hadn’t have birthed him, I would’ve thought Brandon figured out how to clone himself. We will see if there’s any bit of me in that boy… maybe he got my personality? Since Penny got Brandon’s, anyway.
PENNY: Speaking of Penny! She loves her brother. Loves loves loves. She constantly wants to hug and kiss him. She tells me she is happy he came out. She helps out by giving him the pacifier, patting his back, singing songs, or generally just keeping an eye on him for me. I honestly was so surprised, but I’m so happy. She is adjusting well.
Let’s see a comparison photo at the same age…
They are so different. Similar cheeks and noses, and ears too, but so different. Penny does take after me and Thomas after Brandon.
Anyway, life is good here. I’m truly excited to watch him grow and learn. It’s different with the second child, now that I can anticipate what’s to come. I can already see some of his personality peeking through. It’ll only grow from here!
And now, some photos from the past month!
