I’ve been having the same fight with Penny every evening for months now, especially when Brandon’s gone. I try to have a good routine – turn off the TV, have a snack, bath, quiet game, books, whatever. But once she was in bed, she was getting out two, three, five times, opening the door and bothering me. Nope. I wasn’t cool with that. By the end of the evening I am wiped, especially when it’s just me.
I needed a solution. We decided when Brandon was home, now that summer was winding down, that we would have Penny go to bed in her own room again. (She spent the summer in our room because hers was so hot!) I wasn’t sure what to do.
Then I learned of a nighttime routine chart and thought, it can’t hurt. Having a visual for a toddler is a great way to keep on track and learn in the process! So far we’ve used it over a week and it has worked! Here it is:
I made up this chart with the help of some Google images and some Pinterest ideas. I needed something customized to our schedule. Most nights, this is what we try to do, though occasionally the bath and quiet games get skipped and we just start on brushing teeth!
I put a bath first before everything else because occasionally the bath gets her riled up, and I like to put a quiet game in there (think blocks or puzzles) to focus her brain and bring any excitement down.
The last five things are the meat of bedtime, really. She needs to brush her teeth, try to go potty one last time (even if she still wears a nighttime diaper!), get dressed, read one book, and then bed.
And the DONE! part? Originally, I had her using a clothes pin and pushing it down the paper, but it was sticking and was too hard for her to move. Then I taped the paper to a magnetic white board that she could draw on and also use a magnet over the DONE! She loves to move down the magnet and see what is next on the list. Even if she can’t read it, she can see the photos and know what’s next!
Aaaanyway it’s been working. I’m a bit surprised but totally happy. I feel like our fights have gone way down… but maybe it’s because Brandon is finally home again!
