(This is not about poop!)
A few months ago, a blog I follow posted about how she doesn’t use shampoo. Her hair looks amazing, so I was intrigued, and pinned the post for later reference. And then I decided to do it!
Why no-poo? After years and years and years of using regular shampoo and conditioner, your hair needs a break. It needs to breathe! All those chemicals and additives aren’t good for your hair. And heck, shampoo hasn’t been around forever, what did people use before for washing hair? Did they all have gross, greasy hair?
I was worried about greasy hair because I’m prone to it, but I found out that the probable reason I have greasy hair is because I use shampoo. My scalp overproduces! So it was time for a reset.
My shampoo is now a water and baking soda mixture. My conditioner is a water and vinegar mixture. I’m not going to post the whole process here yet, but if you want to learn more about how to go about it, visit this blog post. She explains it all!
I decided to document my journey for a month and see how I felt!
I started after graduation, so I could deal with greasy hair and no special events. This photo was taken on my final day of shampooing. I hadn’t blow-dried my hair because these days, I’ve been just lazy about it. But there ya go, nice and pretty and shiny.
And you can totally tell where I last dyed it. Whoops.
One week! Why do I take photos on Sundays (aka: no makeup days)? Other notes for this photo: I took it at a different time, so the lighting is off. I didn’t blow-dry my hair, I went on a bike ride right before taking this photo and had it in a pony tail. But I figured I should take it down to show you. (Also, Penny is screaming in the background, hence my strained face…)
I washed my hair once since last Sunday, on Friday. So I went a fair amount of days before deciding it was time. I’ll probably wash my hair tomorrow though. It isn’t horribly greasy and because I wear ponytails all day, it doesn’t bother me too much. I have noticed it doesn’t dry as fast, but maybe that’s just the oppressive humidity lately.
It’s amazing what a little makeup and a quick blow-dry can do to you, right?
I feel like my hair isn’t nearly as greasy as before, though it’s not 100% there yet. Some things to note: It feels more tangled when down, not as smooth, and gets poofier. Though I hear volume is a good side effect of doing this. I also notice it doesn’t hold water well, so even when I towel dry, I have water dripping off my ends more than usual! But it air dries faster.
A huge positive of this is a quicker shower! I like taking showers, but these days I have to be quick, so if I’m not washing my hair it takes a big step out of the process. I’ve been washing my hair on Mondays and Fridays. That stretch during the week gets kind of rough at the end, so it feels nice to clean it up before the weekend. I could probably wait until Tuesday to wash again, but I’m a creature of habit!
I did a bit of makeup for you guys but I didn’t blow-dry my hair. Lazy lazy Sunday!
Okay, so, I think I need to rework my formula. I chatted with the girl herself who has inspired me to do this and we both agree that two things need to happen. 1) I need to use less baking soda, and 2) I need to make sure I’m thoroughly rinsing my hair. It’s been feeling kind of filmy lately and it shouldn’t!
The great thing about this is you can work it for your own hair and figure out the right formula. So maybe I need less baking soda in my mixture, and maybe you need more! So three weeks in and changing things up. But I’m still loving not washing my hair.
So I totally mirror-flopped this since I’m a bit OCD and like all the photos to be on the same side. I didn’t part my hair on the wrong side! I’m sure you would’ve never noticed if I hadn’t said anything, right? 😉
Anyway, this week I’m having a love-hate relationship with my hair. On one hand, I’m loving how I don’t have to wash it very often. On the other, I feel like it’s gunky and feels filmy still. I’ve been trying a different formula this week, in hopes that it’ll improve. I’m not going to lose hope yet because it’s only been four weeks! I might just be in the transition phase still. I’ll keep tweaking formulas, making sure it’s getting rinsed out enough, and keep my fingers crossed that I’m doing this right!
Five weeks. One month! (Sorta.)
Dare I say that this weekend, my hair feels a little better? A little softer? More manageable? Am I happier? I don’t know! I will say that it still feels like it has a film in it, but not nearly as bad as before, and it feels more stiff than I like. I miss flowy, soft, shiny hair. My hair does seem healthier, though, and it has grown a fair amount!
I’m okay with it, for now. I plan on going for another month and see how I feel. Maybe tweak it a bit. Do some more research. I do enjoy not having to wash my hair every day, it sure saves time! I also love how natural it is. You can’t get more natural than three simple ingredients.
