This week has been all about Brandon and graduation! It’s so weird that it’s finally here, that he’s finally done, but then at the same time he isn’t even done because his fixed wing course starts in two weeks! The hot topic in class has been PCSing and we’re sitting here twiddling our thumbs with a few more months left in Alabama. But that’s a different post, right?
Brandon’s parents arrived on Tuesday for a short week of graduation festivities. On Wednesday, we had a museum tour and then that afternoon we went out to the flight line to mess around with an Apache. It never gets old! Penny absolutely loves helicopters, yelling hay-co-wee!! and pointing and pointing. She also loves pressing buttons and “flying” like Daddy.
Of course, Brandon’s parents loved the experience to play in the helicopter Brandon is trained to fly!
That night, we went to the graduation ball! It was one of the most pleasant balls we have attended. The food was good and the company was even better! I had a blast chatting with the guys and friends I’ve made, drinking a beer or two, and not really worrying about the baby for a couple hours.
Side story: When we got home and Penny saw us, first she waved both arms wildly and grinned, and then burst into tears and sobbed into my shoulder. It was the best reaction ever and I wish we had a video of it! She loves us. Probably thought we were never coming back!
One of the traditions at the ball is to present your wife with a wings necklace as a thank you for putting up with the flight school mess. Brandon got me this beautiful necklace in white gold and I love it!
And now we’re on to graduation. The day we’ve been waiting for!
We got there around 9:20 for the 10am graduation. It was held at the Aviation Museum on post. It was full of typically Army graduation stuff – prayers, songs, speakers, and then graduation! Brandon was toward the end so we had to wait a bit for his turn. I spent graduation chasing Penny around the museum while we waited!
I got to pin Brandon was he commissioned five years ago and yesteray, I pinned on his wings. It was a special moment. I love being able to be there for every step of this Army journey!
One of the cutest moments was after Brandon got his diploma. He went to stand at attention before we could go up and pin him. Penny saw him from where we were sitting and ran toward him, then stood at his feet until we went up! It was so sweet. I didn’t stop her when I saw one of the Colonel’s up on stage smiling down at her. Let kids be kids, right?
So I pinned him, took photos, headed back to our seats to wait until it was time for them to be dismissed. More graduates and a couple songs later, and it was done. He has officially graduated flight school!
And no, fixed wing doesn’t have a graduation, so this is the real deal. He’s an official pilot!!
Congrats Brandon. We’re super proud of you!
