Moving Day!

I thought I'd shoot off a quick post since the movers are here and Penny is asleep!

Yesterday was super stressful as we prepared for them to come. We dropped off my car to be shipped to LA and then we had to finish packing all our junk. I wonder, how can a tiny little baby need so much stuff? It doesn't help that we're moving right around when she could be growing out of her newborn clothes! So we had to pack double. Geez.

Anyway, the one mover guy is behind me now packing up the living room. He already sailed through the garage. I'm watching my DVDs and picture frames disappear into paper and boxes, and you know what, I'm excited. I'm excited to move on to a new place, to decorate a new home, and to visit family on the way!

Did I mention that's our plan? We're flying to LA, picking up the car and driving ALL the way to Alabama. The first leg will be spent with family in Arizona and Colorado for a few weeks. Then we're off to Alabama with a baby, a dog and a cat in the backseat. Yeah, that'll be fun ;)

And before I go, here are some photos of my moving buddy. She's not going to remember this place she was born, but at least she can say she was born in Hawaii!

New Design!

As you can see, I have a new blog design!!

I wanted something simpler with less columns, more color, and easier to read. I think it's all been achieved here. A big shout out to Brea from Utterly Chaotic Designs. She listened to everything I wanted and gave me my design quickly. She's a busy girl, too! If you're looking for a new blog design, check her out. She gives military discounts :)

Check out the column on the right. I have a new blog button and follow me links!

Pro Bowl 2012

We went to the Pro Bowl yesterday!
We figured since we're about to leave Hawaii, we might as well go. The tickets weren't that expensive at all, either. We ended up going with friends of ours from the ROTC days and it was great to catch up with them! There was a good group of us and we had a great time.

Our day began bright and early. Actually, even earlier because Penny is sick (poor baby, I gave her my cold). I was up every half hour all night dealing with a congested baby. :(

Anyway, bright and early! We headed down to the game to meet our friends at 9:30am to tailgate. Surprisingly, we managed to meet them at the exact same time, even though we were both coming from different directions. It worked out because then we had two parking spots to tailgate from, not one!

Our group expanded with some more friends as the day wore on. We tailgated until just before 2pm when the game started. We filed into the stadium and found our seats. I was kind of mad because when we had bought the tickets, they had told us that section was in the shade. Come to find out, the other side of the stadium was shaded! Brandon and I ended up hanging out in the shaded area until the sun went down a bit.
Me with Penny in the Ergo.
Brandon at the game!

I've never been to a football game and this was Brandon's first professional one. It was pretty fun! Not that I know much about football, but I like a good game. We ended up staying for three quarters before heading home before the traffic began. Plus, we had TONS of laundry to do before the movers came and Penny was just miserable.
Unhappy baby.

But hey, all in all it was a good day with friends and our little family! I'm glad we went and stayed for most of the game! Though I was super super exhausted...

A couple family photos :)

Carry Me!

We're kind of a "hippy" when it comes to our baby. We planned an all-natural birth with delayed cord clamping and immediate skin-to-skin. We use cloth diapers, we aren't vaccinating at this point, I exclusively breastfeed, and I'm currently researching baby-led weaning for when she starts solids. (All these things are done after research and what felt right for us, I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad for what they did with their own kids!). I think the only "hippy" thing we aren't doing is co-sleeping because a) I don't sleep all that well with her in there, and b) Penny just doesn't seem to like it. She sleeps in our room right beside me in the pack'n'play, though!

Anyway... baby wearing! This is more convenience than anything. I don't like lugging around that carseat, do you? Sure, I use the stroller a lot... but I'm really trying to wear her more.

When my mother-in-law offered to buy me a Moby wrap, I was all over it! So cool! I got it, learned to use it, and I love it. Buuuuttt Penny doesn't seem to like it. If she's asleep, she's fine inside it. If I put her in while she's awake or if she wakes up while in the wrap, she starts screaming. Ugh. I've tried loosening it and different positions, but nothing changes it.

That baby looks so nice and snug... boo.

Christina had bought me a Snugli carrier from the Thrift Shop way early on in the pregnancy for cheap, in case. I decided to break it out and see how Penny liked it and... it worked! She just hung there and looked around, all chill. Maybe it was her mood, I don't know, but it worked. So I told Brandon, we're getting another carrier. I didn't like the Snugli because it was cheap and old. I needed something that would last and was comfy.

Oh, and while we're PCSing, we won't have a stroller with us. Definitely needed a carrier!!

We decided on the Ergo, but then I heard about the Beco Butterfly 2 and we had to try it out. Yesterday, we drove to a store nearby to test it. It was nice, I liked it alright. Might have even bought it! (It's this one below, but it was all black).

Then we went to Babies R Us and tested out the Ergo baby carrier. So much better! We both just liked the feel of it more than the Beco, and Penny seemed to really enjoy it. But Babies R Us didn't have the color we liked (the photo below), so we ended up calling another baby store down the road and they had it! Off we went!

So yay, we have a new Ergo carrier! It comes just in time - we're going to the Pro Bowl on Sunday and needed a good way to carry her during the game. Plus, movers come on Tuesday and no more stroller after that. I'm a little sad about the Moby... but we'll keep it around for when she's bigger, hopefully she'll like it more. And for the next baby!

Daddy's Girl

I knew Brandon would love his baby. He's a pretty loving guy and come on, we created life. We created this little baby and I knew in my heart that no matter what she looked like or how she acted, he was going to love her. I just never imagined how deep that love would be.

He comes home from work and reaches out for her. He knows I've been holding her all day, changing her diapers, feeding her every two to three hours, attending to her needs. He comes home and he holds her while he watches TV. His little girl sitting on his lap, cradled in the nook of his arm, while the other hand protectively holds his after-work drink.

And in the morning, he gets up early, even before PT, and takes her downstairs to cuddle so I can get that extra sleep uninterrupted. Sometimes I hear her let out a little cry of protest, usually after being moved, and then I hear his soft "Shhh," and I know he's rocking her back to a comfortable state. Occasionally he'll even change a diaper (a rare occurrence for this daddy) and his sweet words float up the stairs to my sleepy ears, mixed of course with the groans he makes if he discovers a special surprise.

He tells her that no one will ever be good enough for her. He says he will always protect her, forever and ever. He talks about how smart she'll be, how smart she already is, and is in awe at how far she's already come in her six short weeks. He loves seeing her head control when he holds her up ("Look at her holding her head up! So strong!") and he marvels at the little sounds she makes and the little smiles that peek through.

On a daily basis he will turn to me and say, "Look how beautiful she is. We made this. I'm a dad! I love her so much," and all I can do is agree.

Yes, Brandon, we did make this little baby. Look how beautiful she is. I love her so much, too. She's our little baby and she's her daddy's girl.

Happy six weeks, Penelope Ann.

A Nighttime Update!

It's been two weeks since I whined about how the nights are the worst. I wanted to let you know how it's been since then!

Oddly enough, that same night that I complained, Penny decided to sleep almost five hours. FIVE. And then she fell asleep and slept another three! Now I never thought I would appreciate five hours in a row before, but man, do I ever. Thank you, baby.

Oh, and not only did she do it that night, she's been holding strong for two weeks. I can expect to get her to fall asleep usually anytime between 8:30pm and 10pm, and then she sleeps until about 1am to 2am. From there? Another three to four hours.

Also, two nights ago she slept from 9pm to 3:45am. Wow! That was a surprise and yeah, I freaked out a bit. And my boobies were hurting! I'm thinking she slept so much because I'm sick, so she's probably sick too. The last couple of days she's just been sleeping all day, poor thing. She doesn't seem sick, but she could be.

Anyway, as you can see, the sleeping thing is going well. We've only had two rough nights. One night she woke up at 1am and fell asleep at 2am, then woke up at 3am and was up until almost 4:30am. Boo. And last night she was making all kinds of grunts and groans and wouldn't fall asleep right away. It could've just seemed rough because of my cold... I just didn't want to deal with her!

I keep thinking tonight will be the night, tonight she'll be up every hour and I'll be exhausted. But she surprises me every time! Sleep on, baby, sleep on!

Changes & Following

I'm going to be rolling in some changes soon, starting with a new blog design. I love this one but it's been almost two years and I think it's time for a change. I want something sleeker and less cluttered, too. I can't wait to see my new one! Keep an eye out in the next few weeks for that to happen.

Other changes? I want to be more connected to the whole blogging thing. I'm not really in the whole bloggy-world, but I want to be. I mean, I've been blogging long enough and have started to gain more followers. I better get on it!

You've probably read in other blogs about Google Friend Connect being discontinued soon. This is a main way for most people to follow blogs. Now you have to decide how you'll receive your blogs! I don't have this one set up for emails yet but I should soon.

Here's a few other ways you can follow me, or other blogs:

Bloglovin': I found this site through a well-adjusted pessimist. I was skeptical at first because I always just used the Blogger blog roll for my subscriptions. I'm actually really liking this website! I recommend it!

Facebook: Did you know I have a FB page? And that I post all the blog posts on there every time? You should "like" my page to get updates!

Twitter: I just re-opened my Twitter account. I was originally using it for my writing "career" but since that's not happening quite yet, I'd rather work on my blog! So I changed my Twitter handle and am hopefully going to get more followers. However, in an effort to curb the random subscribers, I made it private. If you want to follow my goings-on, just ask to follow me. You'll get all the wonderful to-the-minute updates like "Penny just pooped" and "Middle of the night feeding!"

Those are the three main ways to follow me! And keep an eye out for the changes, it'll hopefully be even easier to get blog updates.

What's wrong with being a girl?

I've recently come across a couple articles about parents raising their children without a gender (see one here: Parents Reveal Child's Gender After 5 Years; and here: Baby Storm Raised Genderless). These children are born male or female, but other than their parents and close family, no one knows this. They are raised gender-less in an effort to avoid male/female stereotypes and so people won't make assumptions about them right from birth. The parents are trying to show that a boy can wear dresses if he wants to and a girl can play with trucks if she wants to.

But it makes me want to ask... what's so wrong with being a girl?

What's wrong with wearing pink and purple, and pretty dresses and bows in your hair? What's wrong with wanting to grow up to be a princess? Is there something so bad about a girl playing with a toy kitchen or toy vacuum? Can't a little girl play with dolls and stuffed animals if she wants to?

Don't get me wrong, I was a tomboy. I hated wearing dresses once I could choose my own outfits. I climbed trees with the best of them. My favorite toys included Hot Wheels and G.I. Joe's.

Yet I was a girl. I had long hair, which my mom braided almost every day. I thought it was fun when people painted my nails (even though they were too short from biting them!) I wore dresses when my mom told me to, and I didn't mind that much. My other favorite toys? Barbie's!

And hey, what's so wrong with being a boy? What's wrong with playing with trucks and cars and toy guns? What's wrong with running in the mud and climbing everything? Is there something wrong with playing with tools and video games?

No, there's nothing wrong with being a girl or a boy. There's nothing wrong with embracing the gender you were born with. And there's nothing wrong with a girl acting more like a boy and a boy acting more like a girl. We shouldn't be imposing our adult beliefs (in these parents' cases, gender neutrality) on children who know no differently.

So yes, I'm dressing my baby girl in pinks and purples, because I have no problem with her being a girl and I want her to know that it's ok, being a girl is kinda cool. There's nothing wrong with who she is.

What We've Been Up To

Drinking beer...

And sleeping it off!

Ok, no, neither of us has been drinking beer. Well, Brandon has. He's the resident beer drinker in the house! I had a bit the other day but I can only handle a little bit, and then I get all worried (even though I had some right after feeding her and didn't feed her again for a few hours).

What we've been up to! Well, let's see here...

Luncheons: Yesterday was my last spouse club luncheon here in Hawaii. It was also the first with Penny! Man, is she popular. Everyone couldn't help just staring at her. And one lady held her while I ate my lunch - heavenly. I won another prize, of course, some pretty hair barrettes. I also bought Brandon this stained-glass angel that's in Aviation colors. I thought it appropriate for our new adventure! I'm going to miss these luncheons, but maybe I'll join the spouse club at Rucker.

PCSing: Brandon has informed me just this morning that his orders are finally in! Today he has an appointment to set up the movers (hopefully coming at the end of the month). Now we have one full week left before it's go time.

I have so much to do! Throw away a bunch of junk, sort through things, pack... in between entertaining this baby and all other duties. Oh, and we have to set up shipping Dexter and my car and booking the hotel stay and... everything. Less than a month before we leave!!

Friends: I have to see everyone before we leave! I visited my old coworkers yesterday to show off my baby ;). I have other friends I want to see, but when will I do it?!

Ok, Penny is up again! Time to get back to work ;)

Whatcha Reading? Wednesday

So remember the books I was reading two weeks ago? I'm still reading two of them! I've barely touched Salt and I kinda stopped reading The Husband Trap. I'm finicky when it comes to books, I suppose. I'm always reading something, but it takes me a bit to get into a book!

Last week I chugged through Sarah's Key. It was really good! I recommend it!

This week I'm working on The Night Circus. It's our book club pick and I decided to check it out since I don't have another book I want to read. It's a little weird, but it's intriguing. I'm not sure if I love it yet.

So... whatcha reading? Link up!

Hey It's Okay Tuesday!

You know what to do ;)

Hey, It's Okay...

To take one look outside, see the gloomy rainy clouds and decide you aren't stepping foot outside the door.

To put the baby in the swing instead of rocking her yourself. Sometimes you need a break!

To not be surprised that Brandon already broke his RC helicopter. It was only a matter of time. :P

To love that Friends is on for 2 hours straight around lunchtime. I love this show!

To have not cleaned the fish tank in awhile... (s/n: anyone want a betta fish?)

To have gone to the mall with Brandon and dragged him in Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works. I wanted new undies! And I had a gift card and needed body spray!

To like the Allstate commercials more than Geico.

Penny - One Month

Penny - you're a month old!

How far you've come in just a month! According to my scale (which isn't that accurate), you weigh ten pounds, or at least close to it. You've grown a couple inches, too. We know because we have to adjust the straps on the car seat now! Your hair is still a nice brown, though it looks lighter when it's clean. Your eyes are steely blue and I'm anxious to see what they end up being.

You're still fitting in newborn size clothes, though they're fitting much better than they did when you were born. As for diapers, you're wearing infant sized pre-folds still with the Thirsties covers. We've had to start buttoning them a little looser because they dig into your skin - you're gaining weight!

You eat like a champ and have since the first day. You went through a growth spurt around three weeks, where you were eating every 1-2 hours. Once we got past that, you were back to eating about every three hours again. You're a quick nurser, too! You do have troubles with choking, but we're working on it.

I think we've figured out the nighttimes because the last three nights, it's been great. You're most active right after dinner time up until bedtime. The last "daytime" nursing is usually around 9pm, and then you fall asleep between 9 and 10. Then you'll sleep for a good four hours! I'm usually awake between 1am and 2am for another nursing, and then again around 5am. It's really nice!

Your favorite "lullaby" is American Pie by Don McClean. You're also partial to Mr. Tambourine Man, I've Been Working on the Railroad, and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Oh, and If You're Gone by Matchbox Twenty. (So many sad songs lol)

Throughout the day, you're awake much longer than weeks ago. I love when you're active and happy. You've started even trying to "talk" to us when you're in a good mood. It's so cute!

You hate tummy time, but we're working on it. You love to lay on our chests and fall asleep that way. You especially love playing with your Daddy. He loves cuddling and playing with you! You don't care when Dexter licks you, either. You're such an easy going baby.

It's been a crazy one month, but I think we're finally adjusting. We love having you in our lives and look forward to many more months!

Yard Sale... Again!

This morning was the post-wide yard sale and we took advantage of the crowds to sell some of our junk. It started off really well, actually, and in the end we sold over $100 worth of stuff. We weren't out to make much money, we just wanted to move product, so I was surprised that we made so much.

What did we get rid of? An old broken computer, some computer games, cat stuff, some clothes, a couple books, a couple cameras, and other trinkets. We were only outside for 3 hours too!

The rest of the stuff that we didn't sell went to the Thrift Shop (except for one box) because we need to clean this house up a bit. You don't realize how much stuff you have that you don't need until you move. We still have a lot, but much less.

Oh, and good news: We sold our couches! And the guy isn't going to pick them up until our household goods are picked up so we have somewhere to sit until then. Yay!

And for fun, here's a pic of Penny in the Moby, taking a nap. She was cool with it for the first half of the morning, then she freaked out and spent the rest of the morning either in Brandon's arms or in the bouncy chair. But hey, she likes the Moby wrap much better now.

Mommy Moments

Crazy mom moment... waking up when you're finally sleeping well convinced that the baby is in the bed with you. After throwing the sheets around looking for her, you see she's in her own bed, sleeping soundly.

Happy mom moment... when she finally falls asleep and stays asleep!

Grumpy mom moment... after changing her for the third time in a row, she poops. Again.

Helpless mom moment... you just get in the car and are finally driving down the road when she starts screaming. You can't reach the pacifier, either!

Funny mom moment... putting the baby down for tummy time and she freaks out and almost flips herself over.

Frustrated mom moment... you know she just wants to sleep but you don't know what to do to get her down!

Overjoyed mom moment... seeing those phantom smiles as she's falling asleep and knowing that you can't wait until she actually smiles for real. It melts your heart every time!

Four weeks down. Can you believe it?

The nights are worst!

Here we are, nearly four weeks in, and I'll admit it: the nights are the hardest part.

I'm not a night person. I'm not even an evening person. I thrive in the morning, I get my best work done before noon. Come 3 o'clock, and I'm done. Brandon is similar. We like to go to bed early; we'll sometimes be in bed by 7:30pm so we can read for a bit before falling asleep by 9. Brandon gets up early, like 4-4:30, and I'm usually up by 6 to start the day.

Of course, Penny wakes up right after dinner and likes to stay awake for awhile. Right when I want to relax with a bath and a book. This isn't too horrible, I can handle this. It's the middle of the night feedings that wear me down.

The nights when she wakes up every few hours, eats and then falls right back to sleep, those are the best nights. I usually get two of these in a row, and then we have a couple bad nights. The ones where she's awake every couple of hours, where she's fussy, or where she just decides not to fall asleep. Grrr.

I'm a mess at night! I groan, I whine, I ask Penny what's wrong and what she wants me to do for her. Just a mess. It's kind of pathetic!

I know I need to be patient and I try so hard, but when I'm awake for over an hour at 1am... ahhh, it wears on me. And once I finally get her to sleep I am so on edge worried that she'll wake up again! Unless it's a good night, of course. Then we both fall blissfully asleep.

So yeah, the nights are the worst part, but she's just a wonderful little baby during the day when Mommy is in a good mood!

The MilSpouse Quiz

Most recently seen on... A Few of My Favorite Things and chambanachik!

1. How did you and your spouse meet? In ROTC in university. It was probably sometime in late August, early September, of 2005, when I had just started school as a freshman and he was a sophomore. I don't have too many memories of him in those early days, but we ran in different ROTC circles. We started dating at end of that school year.
2. How old were you when you two met? I was 18 and he was 19 (almost 20). When we started dating, I was 19 and he was 20.
3. How long have you been together? We've been together since May 12, 2006. Married since June 1, 2008. It'll be 6 years this year!
4. Where are you and your spouse originally from? I was born in Canada and lived there until I was 12, then moved to Denver, and then to Colorado Springs for college. He's born and raised in Colorado Springs.
5. How did you feel about him joining the military? No problem, seeing as we were both in ROTC already!
6. Where did your spouse go to Basic Training? No basic training for an officer! But he did his officer basic course at Ft Benning, GA.
7. Has your spouse ever been deployed? Yep. Iraq: July 2010 to June 2011.
8. Ever been to his promotion ceremony? Every single one! And I pinned him every time :D
9. How long have you been a military wife? I guess our whole marriage, so three and a half years.
10. Did you marry him before or after he joined? Technically before he was officially in the Army, but after he commissioned. Complicated...
11. How did your husband propose? We were about to fall asleep and I rolled over and he was holding the ring! lol
12. Where did you get married? Right outside of Colorado Springs in Manitou Springs as a beautiful old house.
13. How old were you two when you got married? I was 21 and he was 22.
14. Did he wear his uniform on his wedding day? Of course :)
15. Where are you and your spouse currently stationed? Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. For only a little bit longer.
16. Do you live on base? Yep! It just made sense when we moved here.
17. How long were you married when you had to go through your first separation? Well, he left for 2 months just 2 weeks after our wedding... and then he was gone for 5 months, 6 months after we got married!
18. What is your favorite base so far? Schofield, definitely. But it's between this one and Benning, soooo....
19. Do you think your spouse looks good in his uniform? Um, yeah.
20. Do you think military life is more advanced than civilian life? No?
21. Do you like the benefits you receive as a military dependent? Of course! I'm not going to complain about health care and discounts.
22. Do you have a lot of military wife friends? I think the majority of my friends are milspouses...
23. What is the hardest part of the military life? Saying goodbye!
24. Do you own military wife stuff? Not really. I have one sign about Army wives...
25. Do you support your spouse as a member of the military? Of course. I would support him in any way, no matter his job!

Moving House

It's January 9th. That means that in only a few short weeks, we'll be packing up. And in about a month, we'll be flying off this island. OMG.

It kind of snuck up on me. Remember how Brandon got into flight school way back in July? While he's been working on getting us out of here, I've been working on a baby. I told him I wasn't going to worry about moving until I had her. Well, I had her. And then I didn't worry too much until about a week ago when I really realized, Crap, we're moving SOON.

We don't have official orders yet, but Brandon is working on it. We know when we're going to leave. We don't know when the movers are coming, but we have an idea. It's within the next few weeks...

So now I have tons to do... short list:

- Inventory our big ticket items in case they get broken/stolen.
- Get Dexter ready to fly, and then send him.
- Figure out which hotel we want to stay at for our 10 days TLA (Waikiki perhaps?)
- Find a cleaner for our house (because we don't want to do it!)
- Pack suitcases for 3 people for a month and a half...
- Enjoy Hawaii while we're still here.
- Everything else!

It'll be a busy time. I mean, I'm looking forward to moving on to our next adventure, but holy crap... it's coming up fast. I don't feel prepared at all!

Three Weeks

Here we are, three weeks since Penny was born. Can you believe it? I feel like each day goes by so quick and suddenly, we're closer to a month than we are to her birth. Yikes.

I've been recovering well! The first couple weeks were tough. I did get cut into, after all. I was worried when my good meds ran out, but I found that I was past the really bad part. I could walk without losing my breath. I could stand up and move without having to pause. I didn't have to spend the last part of the day sitting on the couch because I had worn myself out too early, just from little things.

I admit, though, I don't feel comfortable with my body right now. It all has to do with the c-section. The part above my incision is partly numb and sometimes hurts if you touch it. My incision itself looks pretty good, as far as scars go, but I hate how my skin bends there now. I'm afraid to touch the area. I'm just not comfortable with the whole area!

Don't get me wrong, the rest of my body is pretty awesome. I'm less than 7 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight and I love seeing my flatter belly in the mirror. I can't wait to be able to start working out (they said at 4 weeks!) and feeling stronger.

We've been adjusting fairly well to this new life. Brandon and I take baby-turns if the other person needs to do something. Penny especially loves cuddling with her daddy, so when he's home, I can do some housework or cook dinner or shower. I've gotten used to waking up at night, I'm an expert at changing these cloth diapers, and I'm learning all her noises and quirks.

Penny is an awesome baby. Of course she is, she came from us ;). She's started sleeping better at night. I usually get a good 4 hour stretch before she wakes up between 12 and 1, and then another 3 hours. By then, Brandon usually gets up and takes her downstairs so I can get a couple extra hours uninterrupted. It's nice!

Then during the day, we're settling into a good eat-wake-sleep routine. She's awake much more every day! I read to her, shake toys in her face, and sometimes do some tummy time. Her favorite thing to do though is to stare up at the ceiling fan. She loves it.

We've started taking daily walks in the afternoon. She's usually asleep, but Dexter loves it and I like the fresh air. She doesn't seem to like the Moby wrap, unfortunately, so I've started just putting her in the stroller for walks. It makes me sad because I love the Moby! But if she's awake or wakes up in it, she screams... she also doesn't really like sleeping in bed with us anymore. That's a blessing but also kind of makes me sad. I want to cuddle sometimes!

Anyway, life has been a bit crazy the last few weeks. I'm struggling to find a new routine now that everything has been turned upside down. I'm learning to not care about folding the laundry right away or doing the dishes, but it's super hard! I don't know how messy people do it :P

Oh, looks like someone is awake and hungry again! Gotta go!
